Woodyard

The Woodyard sits just outside Wakefield and is exactly what it sounds like - a proper working timber yard that's opened its doors to visitors. It's not flashy, but that's rather the point. You'll see logs being milled, timber being sorted, and if you're lucky, craftspeople at work. The smell of fresh-cut wood fills the air, and there's something genuinely satisfying about watching a raw log transform into usable planks.

This is absolutely the sort of place that appeals to school groups and families with curious kids. If your children are the type who want to know how things are made rather than just consume them, they'll get hours out of it. Adults interested in traditional crafts and sustainable timber practices will find it worthwhile too. It's low-key, educational without being preachy, and you can move through at your own pace.

Allow an hour to ninety minutes depending on how engaged you get. There's usually a small cafe on site, though it's worth checking opening hours beforehand as they can be variable. The whole experience costs very little or is free - this isn't a ticketed attraction in the traditional sense.

If you're parked at Broadlands Farm Touring Caravan Site just down the road, it's an easy morning or afternoon visit that breaks up a holiday nicely. Mapplewell Meadows is also close enough for a quick visit. It pairs well with exploring Wakefield itself, which has proper museums and galleries if the weather turns.
