Sandal Castle

The ruins sprawl across a grassy mound just outside Wakefield, and you'll understand why this medieval stronghold mattered the moment you climb up. Sandal Castle was properly significant - a stronghold of the Dukes of York, and the place where the Battle of Wakefield kicked off in 1460. What remains is mostly earthworks and the stone keep's base, which is honest work rather than Instagram gold, but it tells the story if you know how to read it.

You're looking at Norman origins here, with later medieval additions. The keep sits on a motte, surrounded by bailey earthworks that are still readable after all these centuries.
