Newmillerdam Lake

The lake itself is the star here - a proper reservoir that's been transformed into a nature reserve just outside Wakefield. You get two miles of walking trails looping around the water, with decent views across the dam and into the wooded slopes beyond. It's the kind of place where you'll actually spot something: herons lurking in the shallows, the occasional kingfisher if you're lucky, and plenty of waterfowl year-round.

Walkers will find it straightforward and pleasant rather than dramatic. The paths are well-maintained and mostly flat, though the northern loop climbs a bit through the woodland - nothing strenuous, just enough to feel like you've done something. Allow an hour for a full circuit, or half that if you're just after a quick leg-stretch. Families with younger kids will manage fine; there's a visitor centre with facilities and the walks are short enough that boredom needn't be an issue.

It's free to access, which is always welcome. Spring and autumn are probably best - you'll avoid the summer crowds and get better light on the water. The reserve works brilliantly as a midweek break from the caravan sites nearby, particularly Broadlands Farm just a mile away. It's the kind of spot that won't blow your mind, but it fills a morning nicely and gets you outdoors without any faffing about with tickets or timetables. Real value for a Wakefield-based holiday.
