Woodland Dog Field

Out in the Yorkshire countryside between York and the Wolds, Woodland Dog Field is exactly what it says on the tin - a proper off-lead space where dogs can actually run around without a lead attached. It's the sort of place you find almost by accident, tucked away where the fields roll on and there's bugger all else around, which is precisely the point.

The field itself is open grassland with a decent scattering of trees at the edges. Dogs tear about like they've been let out of prison, which owners seem to appreciate. There's no messing about with facilities - it's not a visitor attraction in the traditional sense, just a working space that happens to welcome dogs. Best to check conditions before you go, especially after heavy rain when it turns into a bog.

If you're staying at one of the nearby glamping spots - Acorn Glade or Wolds Glamping Pods are only a few miles away - this is your best bet for letting the hound burn off some energy without faff. Walkers who've brought the dog along will get something out of it too. The Spinney Wild Camping and Wigwam Holidays Ball Hall Farm are equally close, making this a useful stop if you're based in the area for a few nights.

Go early morning or late afternoon to dodge the school-run crowd. Entrance appears free, though always worth a quick call ahead. Yorkshire Wolds walks are close by if you want to combine it with something more ambitious.
