About Woodland
It's a serious spot for anyone who actually enjoys walking rather than ticking off viewpoints. Families with younger kids might find it a bit samey after half an hour unless they're keen on spotting wildlife. Older children and serious ramblers will get hours out of it though. You can lose yourself here, which is either brilliant or a bit much depending on your mood.
The ground gets boggy in patches - worth noting that - and there's no obvious visitor infrastructure. No cafe, no facilities that I could see. Free access, which is refreshing. Allow at least ninety minutes if you want to actually explore rather than just have a quick wander. Spring's the best time, when the place comes alive properly.
Fisherground Campsite, a couple of miles away, makes a decent base if you're doing a proper countryside break. The woodland works well as a morning activity before heading to the Lake District proper, or as a quieter alternative if the main peaks are rammed with day-trippers.
