Woodland

If you're camped at Long Hazel Park near Yeovil, Woodland is the sort of place you slip into for a morning wander without much fuss. It's a proper nature reserve - the kind where you're walking under canopy rather than gawping at a manicured garden - and it's close enough that you won't spend half your day driving there.

What you actually get is woodland. Ancient trees, leaf litter, the works. On a damp day it smells right - earthy, quiet. There are paths threading through, though they're not particularly well signposted, so bring a map or you'll spend longer navigating than walking. The reserve isn't huge; most people do it in an hour or so. Longer if you're into birds or you've got kids who need to stop every five minutes to investigate a log.

Walkers will appreciate it more than anyone. Families with very small children might find it a bit samey - it's trees, not a playground. History buffs won't find much here except the landscape itself. But if you want to break up a caravan holiday with something green and peaceful that doesn't require booking or queuing, this does the job. It's free, which helps.

Go early or mid-week if you can. Weekends bring the usual crowd from Yeovil out for their steps. The reserve works well as half of a day - combine it with a town wander or hit Hadspen Glamping's area if you fancy something with a bit more infrastructure nearby. Nothing fancy, but honest walking.
