Haynes Motor Museum

The Haynes Motor Museum sits just outside Yeovil and is genuinely brilliant if you're the sort who gets excited about old cars. We're talking a proper collection here - hundreds of vehicles spanning a century of British motoring, from early Edwardians to 1980s sportscars. Walking through the hangars, you notice the detail that's gone into restoration. These aren't just museum pieces gathering dust; they're working examples of engineering from different eras.

The museum layout works well. You can spend two hours pottering about or make a full afternoon of it depending on how deep you want to go. Families with petrolheads aged seven upwards will get the most from it, though younger kids might flag after the first hangar. The real draw is hands-on engagement - you're encouraged to peer inside, read the restoration stories, understand what made each car significant.

If you're camping at Long Hazel Park just down the road, or glamping at Hadspen, this fills a rainy afternoon perfectly or works as a morning out before you head to the Blackdown Hills for a walk. Admission costs money, but it's reasonable for what's on offer. Opening hours vary seasonally, so check ahead before you visit - nothing worse than driving out only to find it's shut Mondays.
