Babcary Meadows

The meadows here are proper Somerset - flat, flower-rich grassland that looks almost impossibly green after rain. Babcary Meadows sit just a few miles north of Yeovil, and they're the sort of place you visit not for dramatic views but for what's actually growing underfoot. In spring and early summer, the wildflowers take over: ragged robin, marsh marigold, and if you're lucky, snake's head fritillaries in the wetter bits.

It's a walker's reserve more than a destination that'll occupy a full afternoon. You're looking at an hour or so on the paths, following the gentle contours and watching for birds and butterflies. The terrain is easy - no climbs, mostly flat - which makes it ideal if you're bringing older kids or anyone who prefers a gentle stroll over a proper hike. You won't find facilities or shops here, so come prepared.

This works well as a morning outing if you're based at one of the local caravan parks - Long Hazel Park and Orchard Farm are both within three miles and genuinely good spots. Pair it with a proper lunch in Yeovil town centre afterwards, or visit Hadspen Glamping's area if you're staying further afield. The reserve is free to access, though details are thin on the ground online, so a quick call ahead wouldn't go amiss. Come when the wildflowers are at their peak - late May through June - and you'll see why locals keep quiet about it.
