Woodhow Tarn

A shallow mountain lake ringed by rough moorland and stone walls - Woodhow Tarn sits quietly in the fells above Holmrook, the sort of place locals know but tourists often miss. Getting there means a proper fell walk of about forty minutes from the road, so it's not a casual detour.

Once you arrive, you're looking at water that shifts colour depending on light and weather - pewter-grey one minute, almost black the next. The surrounding hills rise up steeply without being dramatic. It's intimate rather than breathtaking. Walkers absolutely get the most from this spot; families with young children might find the trek more effort than reward. There's nothing there - no facilities, no viewing platforms, just the tarn and the fells.

The walk itself is the point. You'll cross moorland that can be boggy after rain, so decent boots matter. Allow a couple of hours return if you're not rushing. Free, obviously. Go on a clear day if you can manage it - mist turns the experience into something rather bleak.
