Woodhall Spa Aerodrome Nature Reserve

The old RAF airfield at Woodhall Spa has morphed into something rather special - a sprawling nature reserve where concrete runways meet wildflower meadows and the ghosts of wartime aviation hang lightly in the air. It's a proper working landscape, not a museum piece. You'll find yourself walking or cycling across open grassland that's been left to rewild, with breeding waders, barn owls quartering the fields at dusk, and in spring and autumn, passage migrants that pull in the serious birders from across the Midlands.

The reserve works brilliantly for walkers who don't mind flat terrain and big skies - there's something meditative about those long sightlines across Lincolnshire. Families with younger kids will find it free to explore and spacious enough that children can properly stretch their legs without feeling hemmed in. The history buffs get a different sort of satisfaction: knowing this was a fighter station during the Second World War, seeing the old perimeter tracks, spotting the occasional concrete building that's been repurposed.

Access is straightforward from Lincoln, and if you're based at any of the caravan parks clustered around Woodhall Spa - Willow Holt is barely a mile away, or Tattershall Lakes if you want more facilities - this works as an easy morning or afternoon venture. It won't take more than a couple of hours unless you're a serious ornithologist. Bring binoculars. The light across the reserve in late afternoon is genuinely lovely, and you'll likely spot something that makes the walk worthwhile.
