Woodcot Wood

The woods around Kingsbridge are dense and proper, but Woodcot Wood stands out for its scale and the way it opens up along a decent network of paths. You're walking through thick Devon woodland - oaks, beeches, the lot - with enough variation that it never feels like trudging through the same stretch twice. The undergrowth changes, light breaks through differently, and there's genuine quiet here, which is rarer than you'd think near a town.

It's the sort of place that rewards walkers more than casual strollers. Allow two hours minimum if you want to explore properly; an hour if you're just doing a quick loop. Families with kids who can manage woodland trails will do well here - it's not manicured, so there's proper forest atmosphere, but the paths are clear enough that you won't lose anyone. Birdwatchers should bring binoculars. The wood doesn't pretend to be anything fancy, and that's rather the point.

If you're staying at Karrageen just down the road, this makes a logical morning or afternoon walk before heading back to base. The caravan park sits only 2.9 miles away, which means you could easily knock this out without a long drive. Spring and early autumn are best - fewer bugs, better light, and you can actually hear the birds. Worth a visit if you're in the area, though don't rearrange your holiday around it. It's solid woodland on the Devon doorstep, nothing more, nothing less.
