Wood Rig

The walk up Wood Rig from Biggar is a proper no-nonsense hill climb with genuine rewards. You're looking at a modest peak by Scottish standards, but the views across the Lowlands are genuinely impressive once you reach the top - rolling farmland stretching toward the Southern Uplands, and on a clear day you can see right across to the moorland beyond.

It takes a solid hour and a bit to get up there from the main path, depending on fitness. The route itself is straightforward enough, though the final section gets a bit steep and boggy. Wear proper boots. What makes it worthwhile isn't altitude drama but the sense of isolation you get up there - proper quiet, no crowds, just you and the wind.

This works well as a half-day outing for walkers who want something achievable without needing a full expedition. Families with older kids will manage fine, though younger ones might find the sustained climb tedious. It's free, obviously - just rock up and go.

If you're staying at Mount View Caravan Park on the edge of Biggar, Wood Rig makes a decent morning walk before you settle in for the rest of your trip. It's close enough not to eat into a full day, but far enough away from the usual tourist trails that you won't be sharing the summit with fifty other people. The views alone are worth the slog up.
