Wolvercote Lakes

Two gravel pits that flooded decades ago and turned into something worth stopping for - that's Wolvercote Lakes in a nutshell. The water here is genuinely clear, which is rare for old quarries, and you get proper views across to the Cherwell valley if you time it right. There's a walking loop around both lakes that takes about an hour, give or take. The path's flat and well-maintained, so it suits families with younger kids and anyone after an easy stretch without elevation gain.

Truth is, it's not going to blow your mind. There's no café, no visitor centre, nothing fancy. What you get is space, a bit of wildlife if you're lucky - herons, cormorants, the odd kingfisher - and genuine quiet. That counts for something when you're based at Kidlington and everyone else is queuing at Oxford's tourist spots. It's free to walk, and the nearest decent caravan base is Greenhill Leisure Park, four or so miles away, which actually has reasonable reviews unlike Diamond down the road.

Go on a clear day, bring binoculars if you're into birds, and allow an hour. Don't expect a destination - think of it as a proper breather between other Oxfordshire bits. It's the kind of place locals use and most visitors miss, which is precisely why it works.
