Witney Lake

Water stretches out flat and calm, ringed by trees that shift from green to gold depending on the season. Witney Lake is the sort of place locals walk past without thinking twice, but visitors often stumble upon it by accident and end up staying longer than planned.

It's a working gravel pit that's been allowed to flood, creating a proper body of water where you can actually do things. Fishing is the main draw here - the lake holds pike, perch and carp, which keeps anglers quiet for hours. There's a walking path that loops around it, nothing demanding, just a gentle two-mile potter with water views. Birdwatchers show up regularly. The spot works for a picnic if you're based at one of the nearby caravan parks - Ducklington Farm Campsite is barely a mile away, or Hardwick Parks if you want something a touch more established.

Don't expect facilities or a visitor centre. There's parking, a few benches, and that's about it. Admission is free. Go early on a weekend if you want a quiet moment; by afternoon it fills with dog walkers and people who've had the same idea you have. It's best in spring and early summer when the water's inviting and the banks aren't muddy. Winter can be grim.

Really, it's more of an add-on than a destination. But if you're staying in Witney or camping nearby, an hour here costs nothing and breaks up the day nicely.
