Cogges Manor Farm

The farmyard at Cogges, just outside Witney, freezes you somewhere between the 1920s and now. Victorian barns still stand; sheep and cattle wander about like they own the place - which, in a sense, they do. You'll spend a good couple of hours here poking round the old buildings, watching demonstrations if you've timed it right, and letting kids loose in the sort of space where they can actually run without you losing sleep.

It's a working heritage farm, not a museum - the distinction matters. Animals are genuinely part of daily life here, and the staff treat visitors as people dropping by rather than crowds to manage. You get a real feel for what Oxfordshire farming looked like before intensive methods took over. The manor house itself is handsome enough, but the outbuildings and land are where the magic happens.

Families with children under twelve will get the most from this. Older kids might find it bit thin on drama unless they're genuinely interested in rural history. Adults who appreciate the unglamorous side of heritage - muddy yards, practical buildings, actual work - will find it quietly rewarding.

Cogges sits well within a week based around the caravan parks scattered near Witney. Cotswold Edge at Ducklington Farm is barely two miles away, making this an easy morning visit before heading to grander attractions elsewhere in the Cotswolds. Allow two to three hours, visit midweek if possible, and bring boots if there's been rain.
