Withernsea URC Church

The red-brick Victorian chapel sits a short walk from Withernsea's seafront, looking every bit the sturdy nonconformist place of worship it's been since 1887. United Reformed Church, to give it its full name, represents the town's serious Methodist and Congregational heritage - the sort of solid religious commitment that built seaside communities brick by brick before the holiday trade took over.

Inside, there's decent stained glass and the sort of earnest, no-frills interior that tells you this was built by and for ordinary people, not landed gentry. The proportions are modest but handsome. It won't take you more than fifteen or twenty minutes to look around properly, and frankly that's the point - this is a working parish church, not a tourist attraction dressed up as one.

Worth a quick detour if you're already in town, particularly if you're interested in Victorian religious architecture or the social history of coastal East Yorkshire. It's free to pop in (check times first, obviously), and the walk from either Parkdean Resorts Withernsea Sands or Sand le Mere is manageable enough. Families staying at the holiday parks might find it slightly dull unless the children have a specific interest in churches, but it's the sort of place that adds texture to an afternoon exploring Withernsea itself.

The real draw round here is the seafront and the pier, but if you've got an hour to kill and want something with a bit of local character, this delivers.
