Wiseholme Holt

The woodland at Wiseholme Holt, just outside Lincoln, is a straightforward affair - no visitor centre, no café, no nonsense. You get trees, decent paths, and the kind of quiet that makes you remember why you bothered leaving the caravan.

It's proper woodland walking territory. The paths are manageable, the canopy thick enough to feel properly immersed in it, and there's enough variety in the terrain to keep things interesting for a couple of hours. Spring's brilliant here if you time it right - bluebells make the whole place worthwhile. Autumn's decent too, though you'll want wellingtons after rain.

Families with older kids will find it pleasant enough, though younger ones might get restless without a specific destination or playground to aim for. This is more about the walking than the destination. Serious walkers and people after a bit of green space between Lincoln's attractions will appreciate it more.

Allow two to three hours if you're taking it slowly and exploring the different paths. Go midweek in the off-season if you want it to yourself. It's free and open access, which is refreshing.
