Swanholme Lakes

The three lakes at Swanholme sit just south of Lincoln, and they're genuinely worth a morning out if you've pitched up at one of the nearby caravan parks. You get proper wetland habitat here - reed beds, open water, the lot - and the birdwatching is the main draw. Bring binoculars and you'll spot grebes, cormorants, and if you're lucky, winter visitors like pintails and shovelers depending on when you visit.

There's a walking trail that loops around, which takes a leisurely hour or so without rushing. The paths are flat and easy, so it works well for families who don't fancy anything strenuous. Children get bored after 45 minutes unless they're proper into spotting birds, mind you. Spring and autumn migrations are peak times - October especially can be crackling for migrant warblers if you know what you're looking for.

It's free to access, which is always a bonus. Car park's small but rarely rammed. From Hartsholme Country Park campsite you're barely ten minutes away, making it ideal for breaking up a caravan holiday without having to venture far into Lincoln itself. The reserve is managed reasonably well, with interpretation boards dotted about, though facilities are basic - there's no cafe, so bring a flask.

Worth the detour? Yes, especially if you're a keen birder or just fancy a peaceful walk. Don't expect drama or crowds. It's the kind of place that rewards patience and a pair of good binoculars rather than making a grand statement.
