Winston Churchill Plantation

You'd be forgiven for expecting something grander given the name, but Winston Churchill Plantation is essentially a working forest - rows of conifers planted in neat formation across Shropshire countryside near Bridgnorth. It's not a destination you'd trek to on its own, but it makes a solid waypoint if you're already exploring the area.

What you get here is proper woodland walking. The forest floor is soft underfoot, paths wind through decent-sized trees, and on a clear day there are views across the rural landscape. It's the sort of place where you notice birdsong and the smell of pine. Kids generally enjoy the space to run about, and it's manageable enough for a casual family outing - you won't need hiking boots or special kit.

Walkers will appreciate it most. An hour's explore is realistic unless you're really keen to map every corner. The forest feels quiet and genuinely cuts you off from the noise of Bridgnorth just down the road, which is rather the point.

If you're staying at Wheathill Touring Park, it's only 3.8 miles away - makes for an easy morning stroll before heading into town for lunch. Free to access and no time restrictions, as far as typical forestry goes. Bring sensible footwear though, especially after rain when it can get boggy. Don't expect facilities; this is forest, not a country park attraction.
