Winnall Moors Wildlife Reserve

You'll find Winnall Moors just outside Winchester, a proper working wetland that actually does what it says on the tin. This isn't some manicured nature reserve where the birds know they're being watched - it's the real thing, muddy paths and all. The moors flood seasonally, which means the birdwatching can be exceptional in winter when migrating species rock up. Waders, wildfowl, sometimes the odd raptor if you're lucky enough.

It's a walker's place primarily. The trails aren't demanding, but they're engaging - you're looking at maybe an hour or so to do a decent loop. Bring binoculars if you've got them. The Winchester bypass runs nearby, so it's accessible, but you'll hear the occasional car, which takes the edge off the peace slightly.

Best time to visit is October through March when the wetland's at its fullest and migration season's in full swing. Spring's decent too if you're into nesting season activity. Summer can feel a bit underwhelming - the water level drops and it loses some of its magic.

Family-wise, it works for kids who are into wildlife spotting, though younger ones might get restless if nothing dramatic happens in the first twenty minutes. If you're based at The Spinney Caravan Park six miles away, this is absolutely worth the short drive as a morning or afternoon activity. Pairs well with a Winchester town centre wander - you could easily do both in a day.
