Wingham Wood

A proper woodland walk rather than a formal attraction, Wingham Wood sits just outside Maidstone and delivers exactly what you'd want from a Kent forest - quiet paths, decent cover, and enough room to actually breathe. The trees are mature and well-spaced, so even when it's been raining, the ground underfoot isn't a complete bog. There's no visitor centre or facilities to speak of, which is honestly refreshing.

This works best for walkers and families who want an hour or so in the trees without the crowds you'd get at somewhere more famous. Young kids will find it decent for exploring - there's enough undergrowth and fallen branches to make it feel a bit wild - but it won't hold their attention for more than ninety minutes. If you're after a proper ramble, it's ideal. If you need playgrounds and cafes, look elsewhere.

Come in spring when the bluebells are decent, or autumn when the light filters through properly. Summer's fine but can feel a bit hemmed in. Free to access, no need to book anything or pay at a gate.

Stay at one of the nearby parks - Chegworth Mill Glamping gets consistently brilliant reviews and sits at 3.8 miles out, which means you could base yourself there and add Wingham Wood as a morning walk before moving on to something grander. Bearsted and Oak View are both solid options too if you want a more traditional caravan setup. The wood fits neatly into a wider Kent park holiday without demanding much of your schedule.
