Wingfield Manor

The crumbling brick tower of Wingfield Manor rises out of the Derbyshire countryside like something from a Gothic novel, though in reality it's far older and considerably more interesting than any fiction. Built in the 1440s by Ralph Cromwell, this fortified manor house never quite finished what it started - the main structure remains incomplete, which somehow makes it more compelling than a fully restored stately home might be.

What you get is essentially the chance to wander round substantial medieval ruins. The brick tower itself is the main draw, and you can see how seriously they took defence back then. The walls are thick, the windows small and strategic. It's the kind of place where history feels tangible rather than described on a placard. Families will find it keeps kids occupied for a decent hour or so - plenty of nooks to explore and walls to clamber round, though you'll need to watch littler ones near the drops.

It's free to access and essentially open whenever, as there's no formal gate or visitor centre. Go early morning or late afternoon to avoid the carpark chaos from Belper's day-trippers. The site sits nicely within reach of several good camping spots - The Firs and Yew Tree Farm are both under four miles away, making it easy to combine with wider Derbyshire exploring.

Worth the detour if you're into medieval buildings and don't mind a bit of rough ground. Don't expect manicured gardens or gift shops. Expect atmosphere and genuine age.
