Windmill Library

The old windmill in Glenrothes has been converted into a library - which sounds like the sort of thing that should be twee but somehow works. You get a proper local library with all the usual stock, but housed in an actual working windmill, which does change the feeling of browsing for a book. The building's the main draw here, honestly. The circular rooms and narrow stairs are charming if you're into that sort of thing, though navigating the stacks in a windmill isn't the most practical setup ever devised.

It's genuinely useful if you're staying at one of the caravan parks nearby - Kingdom Caravan Park is less than four miles away, as is Kinghorn Harbour - and need to pick up something to read or kill an hour on a rainy afternoon. Kids might find the novelty of a windmill library interesting for about thirty minutes, then lose interest unless they're already keen readers. Adults who love old buildings and local history will get more out of it.

The place opens weekday mornings through to 5pm, Saturdays until 1pm, and it's free to use if you've got a library card or can get one. Allow 30-45 minutes if you're just having a look around and grabbing a book. It's not a destination in itself - you wouldn't drive an hour out of your way for it - but if you're based at one of the local holiday parks for a week, it's worth a visit on a day when the weather's doing nothing special.
