Windmill Hill Plantation

The forest sprawls across the hillside south of Whitby with the kind of quiet that makes you realise how rare proper silence has become. Windmill Hill Plantation is a working woodland rather than a manicured country estate - coniferous trees dominate, with walking tracks that wind through surprisingly dense cover. On a clear day you'll catch glimpses back towards the coast, though frankly the views aren't what you're here for.

It's genuinely decent for anyone wanting a proper woodland walk without the tourism circus of Whitby itself. You can knock out a loop in forty minutes or take it slower if you've got time. The ground underfoot is mostly well-drained, though it gets boggy in patches after rain - standard North Yorkshire woodland, really. Families with kids used to muddy boots will get more from it than anyone expecting a scenic ramble; the forest canopy keeps things cool even on warmer days, which is handy.

Access appears to be free, and there's no obvious visitor centre to navigate. The nearest proper base is Whitby, just a few miles north, though Broadings Farm Caravan Site and Northcliffe & Seaview Holiday Parks sit even closer - both solid options if you're planning a week in the area. Pair this with a coastal walk and Whitby's abbey and you've got yourself a proper day sorted. It's not spectacular, but that's rather the point.
