Windmill Hill Nature Reserve

Rolling chalk downs dotted with ancient hawthorn scrub make Windmill Hill a proper countryside escape just outside Evesham. The reserve takes its name from the windmill that once crowned the hilltop - though nothing remains now except the elevated views across the Vale of Evesham and distant Malvern Hills.

Walkers will find a network of well-maintained footpaths threading through different habitats, from chalk grassland alive with wildflowers in summer to patches of woodland that shelter wildlife. The climb to the summit isn't too taxing, but it's steep enough to get the heart pumping and reward you with those sweeping panoramas.

Families with older children who don't mind a bit of uphill walking will enjoy this spot, though toddlers might struggle with the terrain. Birdwatchers often do well here, particularly during migration periods when the elevated position attracts passing species.

Access appears to be free and unrestricted, making it an excellent day out for those staying at nearby holiday parks like Bredon-Vale Caravan and Camping or Ranch Caravan Park. Allow a couple of hours to explore properly, though you could easily spend longer if you bring a picnic to enjoy at the top. Best visited on a clear day when those views really shine - on misty mornings you might find yourself walking in cloud.
