Maypole

Standing alone in a field near Evesham, this 18th-century maypole might just be England's tallest permanent example. The white-painted timber pole stretches 99 feet skyward, topped with a weathercock that's been spinning in the Worcestershire breeze for over two centuries. It's a proper piece of folk history - not the temporary maypoles you see at village fetes, but a permanent monument to community celebration.

History buffs will appreciate the backstory. Local legend claims it was erected after villagers complained their May Day festivities were being overshadowed by neighbouring settlements with taller poles. The result? This towering statement of village pride that's outlasted most of the houses around it.

Families staying at nearby Bredon-Vale Caravan and Camping can easily walk here - it's less than a mile away and makes for a decent leg-stretch with the kids. Though don't expect to linger long; there's not much beyond the pole itself and the surrounding farmland views. Ten minutes tops, unless you're particularly keen on rural photography.

Ranch Caravan Park and The Springs Holiday Park are both within easy driving distance too, making this a quick stop rather than a destination. Best combined with exploring Evesham proper or heading into the Cotswolds. It's free to visit, assuming the field gate isn't locked, and there's roadside parking if you're lucky.
