Windle Bleak Hill

The walk up Windle Bleak Hill from Skelmersdale is straightforward enough, but the view at the top catches you off guard. You're looking out across Lancashire's moorland plateau - not dramatic in the Alpine sense, but proper moorland with real breadth to it. On a clear day you can see the Pennines rolling away to the east. The ascent itself takes maybe an hour from the town and the path is well-trodden, though it gets boggy in patches after rain. This is walker territory rather than a destination for casual tourists. Families with older children will manage it fine, though toddlers will struggle on the muddier sections. There's something refreshing about a summit that hasn't been commodified - no café, no visitor centre, no queue of tourists jostling for the Instagram shot. Just heather, wind and space. If you're based at The Secret Garden Glamping nearby, it makes a decent morning excursion before heading back for lunch. Don't expect Helvellyn or Scafell Pike drama - this is subtler. But if you like your Lancashire unvarnished and want a proper walk without fighting the crowds, Windle Bleak Hill delivers. Bring waterproofs regardless of the forecast and allow two to three hours round trip.
