Moss Wood

Ancient woodland near Skelmersdale that feels properly removed from the suburban sprawl surrounding it. Moss Wood is a working forest where you'll find yourself on decent walking trails threading through mature trees, with the ground soft underfoot and plenty of moss doing exactly what its name suggests. The canopy is thick enough that even on grey Lancashire days it feels like you've stepped somewhere else entirely.

Walkers will get the most from it - the paths are straightforward but substantial enough to justify calling it a proper walk rather than a stroll. Kids will manage fine for an hour or so, though there's not much in the way of dramatic viewpoints or adventure infrastructure, so don't expect them to be entertained all afternoon. It's the kind of place you visit when the weather's decent and you want to stretch your legs without having to navigate crowds.

The forest is free to access, which is the best sort of attraction. Timing-wise, aim for autumn when the whole place looks as woodland should, or early spring when things are coming alive. Summer can feel a bit claustrophobic under that dense canopy.

If you're staying at Gibsons Barn or The Secret Garden Glamping, Moss Wood makes a straightforward morning outing before heading elsewhere - it's close enough that you won't burn half the day driving. It pairs well with exploring the wider Lancashire countryside rather than being a destination you'd plan an entire trip around.
