Windgate

There's not much left of Windgate, but that's rather the point. This is a proper Roman fort site tucked into the rolling Lowland landscape south of Biggar, and what makes it worth a half-hour detour is how the earthworks still tell the story - you can actually see the defensive ditches and the platform where the fort once stood. The Romans built it around AD 80 as they pushed northward, and the shape of the land hasn't changed much since legionaries walked these fields.

It's ideal for history buffs who've done the bigger sites and want something quieter, or families with older kids interested in archaeology. You won't find visitor facilities or interpretation boards - just open moorland and a sense of how Rome stamped itself on this corner of Scotland. Bring a map, decent boots, and about an hour to walk the perimeter and soak up the atmosphere.

Free to access, naturally. The nearest proper accommodation is Mount View Caravan Park just five miles away near Biggar, which gives you a decent base for exploring the Roman frontier sites across South Lanarkshire. It's the sort of place that appeals more on a misty autumn afternoon than a rushed summer day - there's something about standing on those ancient earthworks when the light's going grey that actually works.
