The walk up Winder from Staveley is short, sharp, and surprisingly rewarding for what looks like a modest bump on the skyline. You'll gain nearly 500 metres of height in under two kilometres, which means the legs work harder than you might expect, but the summit comes round quickly enough. The views back towards Kendal and out across the wider Lake District are genuinely excellent - proper panoramic stuff on a clear day. Fell walkers and families with older kids who don't mind a steep push will get the most out of it. Younger children might find the ascent tedious, though determined types aged eight and up usually manage fine, especially if you frame it as a proper summit challenge rather than a gentle stroll. Allow roughly ninety minutes for the round trip if you're not racing. The fell itself is relatively open with good paths, and you're unlikely to feel lost even in patchy visibility. It works brilliantly as a warm-up walk if you're staying in the area - the kind of thing you can knock out mid-morning and still have the afternoon free. Two Acre Glamping Pods sits less than four miles away and makes a sensible base if you're planning a few days of walking around Kendal. The Ashes Caravan Park, another well-reviewed spot at under six miles, is equally convenient. Winter conditions can make the higher sections slippery, so autumn or spring tends to be the sweet spot.
