Winchester Cathedral

The moment you walk through those Norman doorways, you're confronted with nearly a thousand years of English history in stone. Winchester Cathedral isn't just a building - it's a statement about medieval ambition, and it's absolutely massive. The nave stretches on for what feels like forever, the vaulted ceiling soaring overhead in that particular way that medieval architects used to make you feel properly small.

Inside, there's the tomb of Jane Austen - literary types will make the pilgrimage just for that. The stained glass is genuinely moving, particularly the newer work mixed in with the older panels. If you've got teenagers who think cathedrals are boring, bring them at late afternoon when the light comes through sideways and everything looks less like a school trip.

Walkers will appreciate the setting too. Winchester itself is worth a wander, and the cathedral sits at the heart of it all - you can easily make a morning of exploring the High Street and the water meadows before heading inside. Allow a good hour minimum to actually look at things rather than just walk through.
