Winchester Castle

The Great Hall dominates what remains of Winchester Castle - a vast medieval structure that's somehow both imposing and oddly intimate. You're not wandering through endless rooms here; what's left is essentially one extraordinary space, and that's precisely why it works. Built by Henry III in the 13th century, the hall still stands with its original roof timbers, which is remarkable given how much of the rest of the castle has disappeared over the centuries. The famous Round Table hangs on the wall - King Arthur's supposed dining table, though historians reckon it dates to around 1270 and Edward I probably had it made to link himself to Arthurian legend. Clever bit of medieval propaganda, really.

The castle grounds themselves are pleasant enough for a wander, with manicured lawns and gardens that feel more stately home than fortress these days. You'll get through the main attraction in roughly an hour, maybe ninety minutes if you're reading everything on the walls. It's free to enter the grounds, though opening hours vary by season - worth checking before you turn up. History buffs will find it worthwhile, though families with restless kids might find it a touch thin unless they're already keen on medieval stuff.

If you're basing yourself at one of the nearby caravan sites - Holden Farm gets excellent reviews and sits just five miles out - Winchester Castle pairs well with the cathedral and the High Street's independent shops for a proper day out in the city. Hookpit Farm, three and a half miles away, is equally convenient and well-regarded by caravanners.
