Wilsummer Wood

The woodland around Wilsummer Wood, just outside Bury Saint Edmunds, is proper Suffolk walking country - flat, quiet, and the sort of place where you won't trip over other visitors. The forest itself is a mix of coniferous and broadleaf trees, with decent enough paths threading through it for a straightforward woodland wander. You're looking at maybe an hour or two depending on how much you fancy loitering. The light filters through the canopy in that way that makes people instinctively lower their voices, and if you time it right in early morning you might spot a deer or two.

This works well for families who want their kids to burn off some energy without needing a visitor centre or a café. It's also a solid option for anyone staying at the nearby caravan and glamping spots - Church View Campsite is barely a mile away, and Kings Forest Caravan Park is only five minutes' drive. If you're based at West Stow Pods or The Four Bells Glamping, this is a manageable morning trip. Walkers will appreciate the relative peace, though don't expect dramatic views or dramatic changes in elevation. It's a proper working forest, not a showpiece woodland.

I'd suggest going mid-week in autumn when the light is golden and the place feels genuinely remote, even though you're close to Bury. Bring decent boots if it's been wet - it can get muddy underfoot. Free to access as far as I can tell, and no facilities beyond the car park, so come prepared.
