The House of Muddy Paws

A rambling Victorian property near Bury Saint Edmunds that's part working farm, part visitor attraction, and entirely devoted to dogs. The House of Muddy Paws is exactly what it sounds like - a place where your four-legged friend is genuinely the guest of honour, not something you've smuggled past reception.

You'll find working farm animals dotted about, interactive displays about countryside life, and enough space for dogs to actually move around without feeling cramped. The whole operation has a refreshingly unpretentious feel to it. There's nothing precious about muddy paws here - rather the opposite. Kids under eight get a real kick out of it, especially if they've got a dog in tow. Adults without children might find an hour adequate before the novelty settles.

Timing-wise, visit mid-morning to avoid the school groups, and absolutely go when the ground's dry if you want to enjoy the outdoor bits. The place works brilliantly as a half-day stop while basing yourself at Kings Forest Caravan & Camping Park, which is just six miles south - that site's properly excellent if you've got a caravan. Church View Campsite and Trelander are also within easy striking distance if you prefer something smaller.

Admission details aren't entirely clear from their end, so ring ahead before setting out from Bury Saint Edmunds. It's the sort of place that rewards a phone call anyway - you'll find out what animals are about and whether there's anything special on.
