Wilson's Corner

You won't find much signage out here, and that's rather the point. Wilson's Corner is a proper woodland walk through dense Northumberland forest, just a few miles south of Alnwick, where the trees press in and you actually feel like you've stepped away from things. The paths wind through mixed woodland - pine, birch, and older oak - and it's the kind of place where you notice the quiet more than anything else.

It's brilliant for walkers who want something less manicured than a country estate and more genuine than a managed nature reserve. You're navigating actual forest floor here, not gravel tracks, so decent boots are essential. Children old enough to appreciate a proper woods will get on with it fine, though younger kids might find the lack of facilities and open space a bit limiting after half an hour. There's no café, no gift shop, no telling sign telling you what tree is what. Just woodland.

Allow a couple of hours if you're not rushing, maybe longer if you're keen on spotting wildlife or taking photographs. Spring and autumn are probably best - you'll avoid the boggy bits that winter creates and the midges that summer brings. It's free, which is the Northumberland way with most of their woodland walks.

If you're staying at South Meadows Caravan Park nearby, this makes a solid half-day outing before heading into Alnwick proper. It's the sort of place you'll either find perfectly restorative or slightly pointless, depending on what you're after from a forest.
