Willows farm

Willows Farm sits just east of St Albans, a working nature reserve that rewards a quiet morning walk far more than it rewards rushed visits. The wetland habitats here attract proper birdwatchers, but even casual visitors will spot something - herons, dragonflies, the occasional flash of kingfisher if you're lucky and patient.

Children who like spotting things will get an hour or so out of it; those expecting playground thrills will be bored within twenty minutes. The light is best in early morning when the birds are most active and the water sits mirror-still.

Little is known about admission fees or formal opening hours - a quick phone call to St Albans tourist office or the reserve itself should sort that. Allow two to three hours if you're bringing binoculars and a proper field guide, less if you're just after a woodland wander.

If you're staying at one of the nearby caravan parks like Cherry Green Trees or The Mimms - both within easy reach - Willows Farm makes a solid half-day activity to balance out busier attractions. It's the sort of place that appeals to older children and keen naturalists rather than the family wanting packed entertainment. Real value if nature's your thing, otherwise best saved for another trip.
