Willie Law

Willie Law sits at 418 metres and delivers proper views across Northumberland once you've earned them. It's a proper walk from Belford - nothing technical, just sustained uphill graft through moorland that shifts colour with the seasons. The summit itself is modest, a cairn marking the top, but the payoff is genuine: on a clear day you can see right across the Cheviot Hills and down towards the coast. No facilities, no crowds, no faffing about with visitor centres. Just you, the wind, and some fairly exposed moorland.

Walkers get the most from this one. The ascent takes a couple of hours depending on your fitness and which route you choose - there are a few options depending on where you park near Belford. It's free, obviously, since it's just a hill. Kids might struggle if they're used to manicured paths and ice cream stops, though teenagers who actually enjoy walking would find it satisfying. The views make the slog worthwhile, and the moorland walk itself has a real sense of wilderness even though you're not that far from civilisation.

If you're based at South Meadows, Middlemoor Farm Holidays, Blossom Plantation or Budle Bay Campsite nearby, Willie Law works well as a half-day mission. Don't go expecting anything fancy - bring proper kit and water - but if you want authentic Northumberland and don't mind the climb, it's well worth the detour.
