A modest stone monument near Tadworth marks the birthplace of William Mullins, one of the Mayflower's passengers who sailed for the New World in 1620. It's the sort of thing you'd walk straight past if you didn't know what you were looking for - which is precisely the point. There's no visitor centre, no gift shop, no crowds. Just a quiet Surrey lane and a bit of English history that America actually remembers better than we do.

Mullins was a shoemaker, a draper, and eventually a founding settler in Plymouth Colony. His story is genuinely interesting if you care about that era - he brought his family across the Atlantic, survived the brutal first winter, and helped establish what became Massachusetts. For history enthusiasts and American genealogy buffs, this is proper worthwhile. Kids will find it dull unless they're already interested in the Pilgrims, and even then it's a five-minute stop, not a morning activity.

The site itself is free to access and takes about 10 minutes to see properly. It works well as a detour if you're staying at Surrey Hills Yurts or any of the nearby parks - Norbury Park and Embers Camping at Polesden Lacey are both within reasonable driving distance and offer proper countryside breaks. Don't make a special trip just for this, but if you're exploring the Surrey Hills area and want to tick off something genuinely historic rather than tourist-trodden, it's worth the diversion.
