Wickham Bishops Sports Field

A proper working sports field that doubles as a surprisingly decent nature reserve just outside Maldon. It's not the sort of place you'd trek across Essex specifically for, but if you're based at one of the nearby holiday parks - Mill Beach, Hoe Mill Lock, or Osea Leisure Park are all within four miles - it's worth an afternoon potter about.

The field itself sits on the edge of the Blackwater estuary, which means you get genuine wetland habitat rather than manicured parkland. Birdwatchers find it productive year-round, especially winter when various ducks and waders turn up. Spring and summer bring dragonflies and the odd heron if you're patient enough to stand still. The paths are straightforward and flat, so it's fine for families with young kids, though there's not much to hold their attention beyond spotting wildlife - no play equipment, no facilities to speak of.

Go early morning or late afternoon if you want to see anything interesting. The light's better too, and you'll avoid whoever might be using the sports pitches. Bring binoculars. Bring a coffee in a flask because there's nowhere nearby to buy one. Allow an hour if you're just stretching your legs, longer if you're genuinely interested in what the birds are up to.

It's free access, which helps. Not revolutionary, but solid for a quick nature fix between beach days at the leisure parks.
