Wicken Pond

The water here is still, dark, and ringed with reeds that crackle in the wind - Wicken Pond near King's Lynn is the sort of place you stumble across rather than seek out. It's a working nature reserve, small enough to walk around in under an hour, big enough to make you forget you're in Norfolk for a bit.

What you get is birdwatching territory. Serious stuff if you know what you're looking for, but equally rewarding if you just want to stand and watch. Herons work the shallows, kingfishers flash past if you're lucky, and there's always something rustling in the vegetation. The paths are boggy in places and a bit tricky after rain, so sensible footwear matters.

If you're staying at one of the nearby glamping sites - Range Farm is closest at three miles away - this works as a morning or late afternoon venture. Not a full day thing, but genuinely restful. The twitchers will spend hours here; families with small kids might find thirty minutes enough unless the children are properly into wildlife.

There's no café, no visitor centre, no gift shop. Just the pond and whatever creatures show up. Free to access as far as anyone can tell, though it's worth checking locally in King's Lynn first if you're making a specific trip. Best visited when the light's good and the wind's down - early morning or dusk in spring gets you the most activity.
