Great Bircham Windmill

The windmill itself is a proper 19th-century working mill that actually grinds grain on certain days - you can watch the sails turn and hear the machinery doing what it's been doing since the 1800s. It's an oddly gripping thing to witness, especially if you time it right and catch the miller in action. Located east of King's Lynn in the flat Norfolk landscape, Great Bircham Windmill stands alone in its own little patch, impossible to miss once you're looking for it.

Inside you'll find a small museum covering the milling trade and the windmill's own story, plus a working bakery where they sell bread made from flour ground on site. That alone makes it worth stopping for - the loaf tastes different when you've watched the mill produce it. The teashop does decent cakes and coffee, the sort of place where a couple of hours passes without you noticing.

Families with younger kids might find it engaging for an hour or so, particularly if the mill is operating - otherwise it's a bit quick to get round. History buffs and anyone interested in rural crafts will get more from it. The flat Norfolk terrain means it's easy walking if you fancy stretching your legs around the grounds.

If you're camping at one of the nearby sites like Dreamy Hollow or Pinecones, it's a natural half-day trip that breaks up a holiday nicely without requiring any real effort to reach. Worth the detour from King's Lynn if you're in the area, though not worth travelling miles specifically for it.
