Wholestone Hill

The walk up Wholestone Hill from Elland takes about forty minutes if you're not dawdling, and it's a proper leg-burner on the way up. Once you crest the top, though, the views across West Yorkshire spread out in all directions - moorland rolling away toward the Pennines, the valley floors green and patchworked. It's not a dramatic peak, but that's rather the point. You get the sense of achievement without needing technical gear or a head for heights.

Families with older kids will find the ascent manageable if you take it slow. Younger ones might struggle with the sustained gradient, and there's not much to do at the summit itself beyond look around and have a sandwich. Walkers on longer routes through the area use it as a turning point or waymark rather than a destination in itself.

Its real value sits in how it fits into a broader West Yorkshire ramble. Pair it with nearby Hebden Bridge Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite as your base, and you've got access to some genuinely good walking country. The peak itself is free - there's no visitor centre or facilities - so you're looking at a morning or afternoon activity rather than a full day out. Best in autumn or spring when the moorland light is clearest and you're not battling summer crowds on the lower paths.
