Whitestrand Pontoon

The pontoon at Whitestrand is a straightforward affair - a wooden structure jutting into the water near Kingsbridge, the sort of place locals use to launch boats rather than somewhere you'd plan a special trip around. That said, if you're staying at one of the nearby parks - Wilton Farm or Karrageen are both excellent and only a couple of miles away - it's worth a morning wander to see what's what. The water can be proper inviting on a calm day, and there's something appealing about watching the tidal movement and whatever boats happen to be coming and going. It's quiet, which is the main thing. No shops, no queues, no shouty ice-cream vendors. Just you and the estuary. The walk here from Kingsbridge takes about thirty minutes if you follow the path along the water, and that's half the appeal - the journey gives you a feel for the South Hams landscape that you won't get driving. Families won't get hours out of it, but it's a decent spot to stop during a longer coastal walk. Bring binoculars if you're into birdwatching. The pontoon itself is free to access, though obviously launching a boat would require different arrangements. Best visited when the light's good - late afternoon works well - and don't bother if you're after dramatic views or anything Instagram-worthy. This is about the simple pleasure of being near the water.
