Whiteside (Wainwright)

The walk up Whiteside is steep, relentless, and absolutely worth every laboured breath. This Wainwright fell rises above Cockermouth in the Lake District's quieter western reaches, offering views that justify the slog without the crowds you'd endure on something like Catbells. The fell sits sandwiched between Grasmoor and Hopegill Head, three peaks that form a natural circuit most walkers tackle in one go. Allow four to five hours for the round trip from Loweswater, the nearest decent parking spot. The ascent kicks up immediately - no gentle warm-up - and the upper stretches demand proper hillwalking boots on wet days. Views from the summit stretch across the Solway Firth toward Scotland on clear days, which makes the 658 metres feel altogether more substantial than the numbers suggest.
