Whitelaw Rig

The walk up Whitelaw Rig from Biggar is a proper hill-bagging affair without the mountain drama. You're looking at 1,965 feet of Scottish Lowland views - nothing that'll require technical gear, but enough elevation to feel like you've earned something by the top.

The approach is straightforward. Most people start from the Abington direction and work their way up through moorland and rough grassland. It's exposed country, wind can whip across here without warning, so don't underestimate a seemingly modest height. The summit itself isn't dramatic - no dramatic cairn or panorama that'll make your Instagram followers jealous. What you get instead is genuine rolling countryside stretching out, with Biggar visible down below and the Southern Uplands rolling away to the south.

Walkers and hill enthusiasts get the most from this one. If you're after a proper summit bagge without committing to a full day out, it's decent. With Mount View Caravan Park just five miles away near Biggar, this works nicely as a morning outing for a park-based holiday. Two hours up, one hour down, and you're back for lunch.

It's free to walk, naturally. The bigger question is whether the views justify the effort - they're fine rather than spectacular. Come on a clear day or don't bother coming at all. Mist up here renders it fairly dull. Weather matters more than most hills around these parts.
