Whitefield Hill

The walk up Whitefield Hill rewards you with proper views across the Wiltshire landscape. It's not the tallest peak in the county, but from the top you get a real sense of the rolling chalk downlands that make this part of the south-west distinctive.

The climb itself is straightforward - manageable for most walkers, though it can get muddy after rain. What makes it worthwhile is the 360-degree panorama once you're up there. On a clear day you can pick out landmarks for miles. The approach from Botswicky Copse is accessible enough that families with older children won't struggle, though younger kids might find the final push a bit tedious.

If you're camping at Nordic Glamping at Botswicky, you've got a decent ramble right on your doorstep - only five miles or so from the base. It works well as a morning outing before heading to other attractions in the area. Allow a couple of hours return if you're not rushing, and bring proper footwear because the paths get slippy.

It's free to visit, naturally, and there's no set opening hours since it's open country. Go early if you want to avoid other walkers on weekends, or head up at dusk when the light does something special across the valleys. The real appeal is the walk itself rather than a specific viewpoint or structure at the summit - it's the kind of place where the journey matters more than arriving.
