White Shank

White Shank sits just outside Moffat, a proper little peak that punches above its weight for effort-to-reward ratio. Allow two to three hours for a steady round trip from the car park, depending on your pace and how many stops you make to catch your breath or admire the panorama. It's a fine choice if you're based at Riverside Holiday Park or Moffat Camping and Caravanning Club Site and fancy something less demanding than the steeper options nearby, but still want to say you've bagged a hill. Families with older kids can manage it without drama; younger ones might find it a touch dull once they're halfway up.

The walk itself rolls through moorland and rough grassland. There's no technical scrambling, just straightforward boot work. Bring decent waterproofs regardless of the forecast - this is the Southern Uplands, and weather turns fast. Free to access, as these things tend to be in Scotland. Best tackled on a clearer day; cloud rolling in can flatten the experience entirely.
