About Hart Fell
The route climbs steadily through moorland and rough grassland, and the landscape feels properly remote despite being so close to Moffat. On the summit itself, visibility is everything. Come on one of those crisp autumn mornings when the air is sharp and you can see for miles, and it's genuinely magnificent. Turn up in cloud and you'll struggle to see twenty metres ahead.
This is a walk for people who actually enjoy hillwalking rather than just popping to somewhere scenic. Families with young kids will find it hard going - the terrain is boggy in places and there's no path to follow on the upper sections. Experienced walkers, though, will find it satisfying: proper mountain air without needing to commit to the Highlands.
Moffat itself sits just south, and if you're basing yourself at one of the caravan sites nearby - Riverside Holiday Park or Howslack Farm are both within a few miles - Hart Fell makes a decent day out alongside quieter walks around the Lowther Hills. Allow a full morning or early afternoon, wear proper boots, and check the weather forecast before you go. It's not forgiving in poor visibility.
