White Lady Waterfall

The walk down to White Lady Waterfall near Okehampton is less about the destination and more about the gorge itself. You're threading through a proper woodland ravine, the kind that feels genuinely remote even though you're only minutes from the car park. The waterfall itself is modest - it's not going to rival anything in Scotland or the Lake District - but the setting makes it worthwhile.

The river's the real star here. It crashes through a narrow cleft in the rock, creating this satisfying thunder that drowns out everything else. In winter or after heavy rain, you get decent volume; in summer it's a trickle, which honestly doesn't matter much because the gorge is lovely regardless. The walk's straightforward enough for families with older kids, though it does involve some steep sections and muddy patches that'll catch you out if you're not paying attention.

Allow 45 minutes to an hour for the full trip including mooching about at the base. It's free, naturally. The real value is pairing this with a stay at Lydford Caravan & Camping Park just 1.3 miles away - you can knock this out before breakfast, or combine it with a proper hike across Dartmoor proper. If you're based at Langstone Manor further out, it's worth the detour but don't expect it to occupy your whole day. Best visited when the water's actually flowing.
