White Hill

Standing 219 metres above sea level, this modest chalk downland summit sits quietly on the Surrey borders, just a stone's throw from Tadworth. Don't expect dramatic Alpine vistas - White Hill is more about the journey than the destination.

The walk up through beech woodland and across open downland is lovely enough, especially in autumn when the colours are proper spectacular. Views from the top stretch across the Surrey Hills, though they're partially obscured by trees these days. Still, on a clear day you can make out the distant South Downs.

Families with young children might find it a bit much - it's a decent climb from any approach, and there's not a great deal to keep little ones entertained once you're up there. Serious walkers will appreciate it as part of a longer North Downs Way trek, but casual visitors might wonder what the fuss is about.

Free to access year-round, obviously, and you'll want to allow a couple of hours for the round trip depending on your starting point. It works well as a morning stretch of the legs if you're staying at one of the nearby holiday parks like Surrey Hills Park or Norbury Park. Just don't expect Instagram-worthy panoramas - this is proper English countryside, understated and a bit scrubby round the edges.
